Queensland Women's Team Announced
Peter McClenahan, Wednesday, 3 March 2010The Women's team to contest the Australian National Women's Championship has been announced. They will be playing at Palm Meadows over Easter, from April 3rd to April 10th. The teams they will playing are: NSW, Country NSW, Victoria Blue, Victoria White, ACT and WA. The team looks good and management are hopeful of a top 3 finish.

BQ calls for Volunteer of the Year Nominations
Col Dick, Wednesday, 17 February 2010Baseball Queensland is calling for nominations for "Volunteer of the Year" to be presented at the Hall of Fame and GBL Presentation Night to be held on Saturday 17th April 2010.
The Volunteer of the Year Award is presented for recognition of an individual's contribution and committment to baseball in a volunteer capacity.
Nominations should include:
- Personal details of the nominee
- Details of Nominee's voluntary contribution and committment to baseball: (Nominations must clearly state the context and contribution made by the persons nominated, as well as the positive impact it has achieved for an organisation or persons within the sport)
- Awards/Trophies/Recognition received by Nominee
- Details of the person or body making this nomination

2010 Hall of Fame and GBL Presentation date announced.
Col Dick, Friday, 12 February 2010The 2010 Hall of Fame induction night combined with the GBL Major League Presentation of Awards will be held on the 17th April 2010 at the Irish Club in Brisbane City.
This night will also see the presentation of the David Nilsson Medal for the MVP of the GBL Major League and the Rams Player of the Year Awards.

It would be great to see representation from all Clubs at this event which is the premier social event of the baseball year in Brisbane.

2010 BQ China Team - BQ Calls for Player Nominations.
Gareth Jones, Monday, 1 February 2010BQ are looking for players interested in participating in the 2010 BQ China Team's tour of Beijing (The 2008 Olympic City) China. If you are interested in participating in the 2010 BQ China Team Tour of Beijing please complete the registration form below. The coaches for this team will be appointed and listed on the BQ website on Tuesday 2 February 2010. Two coaches and an Executive Officer will be appointed to travel with the team.
The appointed coaches will hold at least one open try out (on a date to be advised). Players must register to be eligible for selection to this team. Players born 1/5/97 to 30/04/99 are eligible to try out for this team. The 2010 Little League District Titles may also be used by the coaches to gather information to assist with the selection process. The final team will be announced on 11 April 2010 at the closing ceremony of the 2010 Little League District Titles and posted to the website on 12 April.

U14 QLD State Titles - 18, 19, 20 September 2010.
U16 QLD State Titles - 24, 25, 26 September 2010.
U18 QLD State Titles - 1, 2, 3 October 2010.
Venues are yet to be determined for these events. If your club is interested in hosting one of these events please read over the "State Championship Hosting Criteria" and submit an application to Baseball Queensland by no later than 1st February 2010.

2009 BQ Little League Team Online Diary

The 2009 BQ Little League Team will be touring and playing in Beijing, China from August 10 2009 to 18 August 2009. The team will post daily game reports and travel updates to this site so supporters at home can keep up to date. See below for links to photo's and reports.
Monday 10th August
Finally, the night we had been waiting for had arrived! Even the Broncos racked up unfamiliar Monday night win as their departing gesture for the team. All those practices and preparation were behind us. The team met on time at 9.00pm at the Brisbane International Airport. The players looked great in their walk out uniforms along with our nineteen (19) strong contingent of supporters made up of Mums. Dads, Grandparents and sisters. Unfortunately, we were unable to obtain a group check-in. This proved no challenge for the U.M.s (Unaccompanied Minors) in our group. Uninhibitedly checking themselves in at the airline counter with their E-Ticket and passport.
The players numbered off…the home based family members got a last photo and we said our goodbye's. We reviewed some off our team player traveling rules and left Brisbane on time at 11.45pm bound for our stop over in Singapore.
Tuesday 11th August
After a late meal we settled down for a sleep around 1.30am. Some of us managed to grab a few winkes of sleep prior to the cabin lights switching on around 5.00am for breakfast.
We had around two and a half hours to kill at Changi Airport stopover. Some of the kids spent a little lose change on local sweets and generally walked around the duty free shop to stretch their legs. We allowed the kids to stick in groups of three and needed to be back to the gate on the hour to number off. You guessed it….. two (2) players were eight (8) minutes late and the respective players picked up team shoe cleaning duties. Amazingly, all players were on time for the second hour deadline. The kids felt enlightened by the Singapore stop over, discovering self flushing toilets and free foot massage machines.
Next stop Beijing! The flight was similar to the last with more food and a chance to catch even less sleep for 6 hours. All the players and supporters are mixing well together.
Beijing has a wonderful airport thanks to the legacy of the last years Olympic Games. All was going well until one of the player's coughed infornt of the infectious disease surveillance staff. Instantly he and I were whisked off for temperature testing and held for 15min. Thankfully the all clear was given and we rejoined our anxious team.
Our tour organiser, translator and team photographer met us at the airport and we bused it to our hotel in Beijing in a little less than an hour. We then had less than half an hour to shower and be ready for a dinner.
At the welcome dinner we had a chance to meet the tournament officials and coaches. We received gifts and thanked them for their hospitality and looked forward to playing them over the upcoming week. The food was fantastic and came in the usual overflowing volume.
Managed to have the players in their rooms at 8.30pm.
Wednesday 12 August
Our accommodation is 3.5 star hotel twin share accommodation. We used this opportunity to have players room with someone outside their region to give greater familiarity within the team. The hotel is very clean and for many of the players the first time they have had the responsibility and independence of their own hotel room.
Wake up calls were 7.30am and buffet breakfast at 8.00am. Assorted selection of Asian, Continental and Cooked. On bus at 9.00am. The morning tour was to the Temple of Heaven which provided the perfect starting point of our tour of Beijing. The temple symbol is our uniform emblem!
We had our first chance to barter with the various stall owners for souvenirs. The kids favorite was the Chinese style hackey sack for $1Aus. Next stop was the silk factory where we went through the silk worm process. The supporters discovered 80 cent beers!
Lunch was in a Beijing restaurant for some more Chinese food. The players have had little issue with the local cuisine and need to be congratulated. However, I am not the greatest advocate of Tofu!
Game time…..The players were blown away to realise that the Olympic Softball Stadium was to be the venue for their games. In front of a noisy local crowd the team registered their first win (4-2) on Chinese soil. See game report! Credit due to all the players who performed so strongly having only been in the country less than 24 hrs after such a long travel period.
We went back to the hotel showered and Coach Brockie introduced the players to the traditional Kangaroo Court. Daniel Butcher was fortunate enough to be winner……. having to wear a tiara!
The boys went to bed knowing that all future games will be a much tougher assignment. When we left the Olympic Park the Chinese team were still running laps.

Thursday 13 August
On the bus at 9.00am…our first stop was the Summer Palace which was not a Palace at all. Rather, a stunning complex of pavilions and temples built around a cooling lake. We finished our visit with a dragon boat ride across the lake.
Next stop was the Pearl Factory. The players shopped well to keep their mums happy. We had lunch upstairs in a plush Chinese Restaurant. The dishes were again different and for the first time no tofu!
Game time 3pm at the Olympic Stadium. See game report! Despite the narrow loss the team is very up beat. Brandon Michie took up Brockie's foot race challenge and got the win on the coach!
Note to myself… when brushing teeth do not rinse with tap water as stated in our team handbook I wrote!!!!!! Thankfully, the dugouts had a toilet and dressing room adjoining! Took tablets and all seems to be OK! Only casualty is me!
We bused it back to the hotel, showered had team meeting and kangaroo court. Dinner was MacDonald's. I actually missed Chinese food! We took the players out for a night walk down the main street to grab dessert. The night temperature was still over 30 degrees!
Lights out 9.30pm!
Friday 14th August
The accommodation is excellent. Mums rest reassured that the player's rooms are cleaned daily with fresh towels and beds are made. I will be honest and say that boys will be boys when it comes to rooms! However, untidiness of rooms is not acceptable and penalties were applied. The odd curfew penalty has also been issued, however in general the players have been well behaved. This is all part of the learning experience on their first team tour.
The streetscape around the hotel is diverse, with a shanty market on one side and a modern high school, complete with artificial football field and running track, on the other side. The traffic outside is a mix of push bikes and cars constantly riding their horns. This is par for the course in Beijing and creates a wonderful cultural backdrop and a lasting memory for players and supporters.
Up until today the air has been fairly clear. Today we have heavy smog and temperatures above 36 degrees. Great day for a double header! On the bus at 8.30am.
We went to the famous Silk Alley looking for fake, brand name clothing. Ben our tour guide briefed the players and supporters regarding pricing of goods and what to pay. I.e. $20-25 Nike shocks, $10 branded shirts, $4 watches, etc. The stand out bargaining boys were Alex Taylor, Mitch Stanbrook and Scott Cronan. We had lunch at the Alley in a wonderful buffet style restaurant with Chinese and conventional cuisine.
The players have had a demanding schedule and credit due to the squad in the manner and enthusiasm they have fronted up to their games. I for one, could have slept in the dugout. I am not making excuses as we do not accept them off our players, but it must effect their performance. However, no one would trade the experiences they and the supporters are having. I can understand why previous Aussie teams have struggled in China at this tournament with such a rigorous schedule.
Bring on the double header. We split the games. (see game report) . The Coach's are proud of the player's effort and result on the field. Supporters now have found 60 cent beers and are very happy!
Back to hotel for shower and out to dinner at a Sichuan restaurant. This was the first time players had issues, as it was very spicy hot style food. Returned to hotel for team meeting and bed 9.30pm.
We have the next two days as rest??..... from baseball and are scheduled a double header on Monday. Looking forward to going to the Great Wall tomorrow.

Saturday 15th
On the bus at 9.00 am no games, sightseeing day.
Our first stop was the Jade Factory. Then off to the Great Wall of China. We had some great photo opportunities to savour memories for life. Our wall walk commenced at the bottom of a Valley. It was a steep climb of around 700 steps to get to the second platform. Most of the players at least did this walk with some of the supporters doing enough to say they walked the wall. We spent around 90 minutes discovering and walking. My legs were like rubber when we got to the bus.
Next stop was Cloisonne. This is where enamel vases originated back in the Ming Dynasty (1450). The vases are those big one you see in movies and were used originally for the royal families. We had lunch upstairs in a restaurant that offered more western style Chinese.
After lunch we visited the Ming Tombs. This was a tranquil formal paved walk framed by statues and hedged plants and willow trees. The walk went for around 5 km. A number of players bought the trianglar Kooli Hats and Mao Zedong pony tail cap to capture the Chinese theme.
On the bus and we headed back to hotel for a shower, meeting and Kangaroo Court. Mitch Stanbrook was awarded the daily tiara. We went to KFC for dinner, where I shared a romatic dinner with Cathy Gerber and Jaine White. We topped off the night with a Macca's cone and a night walk home.
Curfew 8.30pm!
Sunday 16th August
Went for my morning walk around 6.00am and the markets were already active. People were having their hair cut on stools beside the road. The sports stadium across from the markets had around 150 kids in camouflage gear yelling in unison during their Kung Fu session.
The players had all slept well and are in great health. Today is another energetic rest day. Bus left at 9.00am to Tiananmen Square. The Square was temporally closed when we got there, so we walked around the parliament house prescient overseen by military soldiers. Once we returned the square had reopened. The place was packed as it is Chinese school holidays. Numbering off became a more frequent occurrence. We walked from the Square to the Forbidden City. Whilst in the city the kids took time out to have their silhouettes cut into paper by a street hawker.
We did a fair bit of walking and to break the trek the players had a competition on how many local girls they could get a welcome kiss on their cheek. Their lead in was in Chinese. Scott Cronan got into double figures and we headed back to the hotel to refuel and a quick rest.
The afternoon saw us back again to Silk Alley. The players and supporters were armed with a list of must gets and had their bartering plans down pat! The players all combined their previous outings knowledge and knew the local lowest prices on shoes, sunglasses, watches and shirts and consequently worn down the venders to get every last Yuang for their money. Laden with our goods and chattels we went to dinner, then onto an outstanding Acrobatic show.
Players in room at 9.45pm. Double header tomorrow! Probably not the best preparation, however it is difficult to trade the cultural experience in the amount of time and the things on offer in Beijing. They don't have sheep stations in China!!!!!
Lets see what tomorrow brings on the field! Everyone is getting on so well.
Monday 17th August
Woke up to morning rain which was not what we wanted for our game day double header. The rain eased for us to visit the Olympic Birds Nest and Water Cube. They are outstanding buildings and a great legacy from the Olympic.
We then drove to a new playing venue not far from the Birds Nest. It was a soccer/softball complex. Their was four artificial fully lit soccer fields as well as two natural turf/deco softball and T/ball fields. The softball field we played on, had the view of the Birds Nest as the back drop to right field.
The rain had stopped and the clouds and smog made playing conditions quite cool. We ate subway at the grounds and the team was good to go! The first game was a nail biter with errors our biggest opponent. They managed to gain composure and win their game. One of our supporters had texted Brisbane Radio station 4BC and we had a live cross on Mike Smith's program, with intermittent score updates.
It all came down to their final game and the Chinese again tried to intimidate with two of their pitchers over six feet tall! It was a low scoring defensive game and for the first time the team made no errors and managed to push runners around the diamond to win 3-1.
We celebrated and doused the coaches with water, packed up our kit for the last time and went back to the hotel for a shower and enjoyed hamburgers and steaks at the Beijing Hard Rock Café.
Later, at our team's awards ceremony we reflected on our achievements. Best pitcher (Jack Raverty), Best Batter (Daniel Simpson), MVP (Daniel Butcher). The team also presented the staff with gifts they had purchased form silk alley. Importantly, we reflected on what we had done off the field and how special the tour had been with the friendships we have made and our knowledge and appreciation of another culture.
We finished with kangaroo court and Griffin Blaskovich received the final coveted award. We remindered him that he would have to wear the tiara all the way home to Brisbane.
The players finally got their late night and had until 10.00am to sleep in!
Tuesday 18th August
We packed our bags had an early lunch and headed to Beijing Airport at 12.30pm. The players for the first time looked tired. The intense schedule had finally caught up with them. Once we completed our group check in it was not long before we commenced our 17 hour trip home, back through Singapore airport. Jack Raverty had a goal to match Rodney Marsh's beer drinking record with ice cream drumsticks, only to find out that the plane had run out after he reached double figures. We landed in Brisbane airport around 10.00am to hugs and kisses.
It was nice to win the tournament, but importantly the players and supporters had a wonderful time together and have made great friendships and lasting memories. Each of us with a different story.

These fees are the capitation fees payable to Baseball Queensland Inc. by the clubs and includes ABF capitation and insurance. The clubs will add their club fees to these to cover the costs associated with running a club.
There is no increase in the ABF or BQ capitation fees for the 2009/2010 seasons.

PLAYER CLEARANCES
Peter McClenahan, Baseball Queensland, Tuesday, 23 June 2009When clubs wish to approach players to transfer between clubs a little bit of courtesy and integrity must be considered. It is unfair to the losing club to have talks going on without their knowledge. Especially if the gaining club is offering a financial consideration even as minor as free or reduced fees, or even a free cap and playing top. ABF CLEARANCE FORMS ARE TO BE USED AT ALL TIMES, EVEN WHEN A PLAYER HAS BEEN PLAYING WITH ANOTHER CLUB IN THE OFF SEASON. THESE ARE AVAILABLE FROM THE ABF WEBSITE, www.baseball.com.au THEN CLICK ON "Policies" THEN "Sanctioning" or Click here. To alleviate the possible intimidation and loss of good relations between clubs the following process should be followed: Gaining Club Write a letter to the losing club and outline the player/s that you wish to approach. A 'cc' should be sent to Baseball Queensland in case of appeal or disharmony. Set out the terms of the transfer to allow the losing club to match or better the terms. DO NOT KEEP SECRETS - Keep everything above board and in the open. You will only harm the integrity of your club. HAVE THE NEW PLAYER COMPLETE AN ABF CLEARANCE FORM AND SEND IT TO THE LOSING CLUB. DON'T FORGET THE PLAYER'S ABF NUMBER Losing Club Approach the player in question and ascertain why the player wishes to transfer. Make an offer to the player to match or better the gaining club's offer, if you wish to do this. Write to the gaining club stating whether or not the player will be released and include your reasons. A 'cc' should be sent to Baseball Queensland stating your reasons for release or non-release. COMPLETE THE CLEARANCE FORM IF THERE IS NO INCUMBERANCE. IF THERE IS, THEN STIPULATE CLEARLY WHAT THIS IS. TURN AROUND FOR CLEARANCES SHOULD BE NO MORE THAN SEVEN DAYS. If you are willing to release the player, then your MyClub Registrar is to "Move" the player to the new club within the database within the seven day period. Get paid to Coach kids in Oz!!!
Gareth Jones, Baseball Queensland, Thursday, 24 July 2008Baseball Queensland are looking for people to conduct Baseball clinics as part of the Australian Sports Commission's Active After-School Communities Program. You don't need to be an expert coach or a professional baseball player. If you are looking for ways to make some additional money or would like to gain more experience as a coach, this program is for you. All the training you will require will take approximately three to four hours and is provided free of charge by the Australian Sports Commission, so you don't need to hold a baseball coach accreditation to get involved.
The program can benefit baseball clubs also, as it can provide you with the means to pay a club recruitment officer to conduct additional recruitment and promotional clinics to compliment the Batter Up recruitment program offered by Baseball Queensland.
